Gray

Dance Work Performed with the Live Band “Elephant Gym”.

”A world that doesn’t like gray areas, yet that’s where you find the complexity, the humanity, the truth”  – Jon Ronson.
The collision of abstract subconscious thoughts and concrete human form is a gray space of peerless beauty within “humans”.

The band’s mathematical rock, with its complex arrangements, irregular pauses or beginnings, unnatural beat structures and unconstrained hangs, reflect the emotions of the flailing limbs.

The three elements: dance, lighting and music unify to impact the audience, in an attempt to force inner contemplation and the exploration of one’s innermost feelings.

The “gray zone” is a familiar part of one’s self that we somehow fail to recognize as ourselves. Through its contemplation and understanding, we wish to attain acceptance and freedom. Gray implies no absolute answer, its potential could be hidden anywhere.

The performance showcases the inner workings of traditional theatrical performances. This is also reflected in the venue choice as the piece is held in an old suburban factory, additional props were placed in a very precise manner on stage to enhance the abandoned appearance of the place.

Due to this particular setting, lighting must be incredibly precise as the stage and background are populated with metallic objects that reflect light. However, this is also an opportunity, by casting subtle warm lights on a selected few of these elements we can enhance the industrial and experimental atmosphere of the factory.
